Introduction

Getting your first job as a fresh engineering graduate is never easy. Sending endless resumes often feels like shouting into the void. The real secret? Networking.

In this blog, I’ll walk you through a proven strategy that fresh engineers can use to connect with HR, meet professionals, and get referrals — ultimately landing interviews in top companies.

1. Create Your Target List of Companies

The first step is clarity. Prepare a list of the Top 50 companies where you would love to work.

  • Use LinkedIn, Glassdoor, and company websites.

  • Focus on industries aligned with your career goals (HVAC, MEP, IT, construction, design, etc.).

2. Collect HR Contact Information

Don’t rely only on job portals. Be proactive:

  • Search official websites for HR email IDs.

  • Call the company and ask for the HR department’s contact.

  • Record all details in an Excel sheet.

This ensures your CV lands in the right hands.

3. Visit Offices Personally

Visiting in person shows initiative. Carry a neat copy of your CV and politely request to meet HR or leave your profile. Even if you don’t meet them directly, you’ll often collect:

  • A business card

  • A direct email ID

  • Or a valuable referral

4. Use LinkedIn Strategically

LinkedIn is a goldmine for freshers. For each target company:

  • Connect with 10 professionals (HR, project managers, engineers).

  • Always send a personalized note:“I admire your work at [Company]. I’d love to connect and seek 10 minutes of your guidance as I start my career journey.”

5. Ask for 10-Minute Guidance Calls

Instead of directly asking for jobs, request a 10-minute call or meeting for guidance. It’s easier for busy professionals to say yes, and often, these conversations lead to referrals.

6. Leverage Your Seniors & Alumni

Your seniors, super seniors, and juniors are one of the strongest referral networks.

  • Reach out to alumni working in your target companies.

  • Ask politely if they can recommend you internally.

7. Track Everything in Excel

Keep things organized. Create columns for:

  • Company Name

  • HR Email

  • LinkedIn Contacts

  • Meeting Scheduled

  • Referral Status

8. Follow Up and Say Thank You

  • Send a polite follow-up after 7–10 days if you don’t hear back.

  • Always thank people for their time, whether or not they helped with a referral.

  • Networking is about long-term relationships, not just immediate jobs.

Conclusion

For fresh engineers, landing a job is not only about skills and CVs — it’s about connections. By building a list of top companies, contacting HR, visiting offices, connecting on LinkedIn, and leveraging your alumni network, you can create opportunities instead of waiting for them.

If you are a fresh engineer, remember this:👉 Jobs come through people, not just applications.
