If you're a mechanical engineering graduate or a young HVAC professional with 1–2 years of experience, your CV is your first impression — and often, your biggest missed opportunity. Having reviewed hundreds of resumes, I’ve noticed a common problem: Overpromising and underdelivering. Many CVs claim expertise in every area of HVAC — design, installation, testing, commissioning, and even troubleshooting.

🔍 But here's the truth: Interviewers don't expect freshers to know everything.

❌ The Most Common Mistake

Claiming expertise in all aspects of HVAC without practical exposure. I’ve seen CVs listing:

  • Equipment selection

  • Procurement of Chillers, Pumps, etc.

  • Project Management

  • Testing & commissioning

  • Troubleshooting

…all from someone fresh out of college or with just a year on-site.

🚨 Troubleshooting? That belongs to the maintenance department – typically after project handover, not during execution. Including it in your CV can raise doubts about your understanding of the project lifecycle.

✅ What You Should Do Instead

1. List Only What You Truly Know

90% of interview questions come from your own CV. So if you include skills you can’t explain, it damages your credibility. Be honest. Focus on what you have worked on or learned with clarity. If you’ve worked in duct installation or quantity take-off, highlight that — and be ready to explain how.

🧭 Know Where You Want to Start: Design or Site?

Before you even write your CV, ask yourself:

👉 Do you want to be a Design Engineer (consultant side)?👉 Or a Site Engineer (contractor side)? Your answer will guide your CV structure and the skills you need to develop.

📐 If You Want to Be a HVAC Design Engineer, focus on:

  • Reading architectural & ID drawings

  • Heat Load Calculations using HAP

  • Ventilation calculations

  • Preparing equipment schedules

  • Duct & Air outlets sizing

  • Pipe sizing, valve packages

  • Preparing schematic layouts

  • AutoCAD skills

🛠️ If You Want to Be a HVAC Site Engineer, focus on:

  • Interpreting HVAC drawings

  • Ductwork installation & supports

  • Pipe installation & valve packages

  • Insulation for ducts and pipes

  • Condensate drain piping

  • Installation of FCUs, AHUs - Chilled water system

  • Installation of indoor / outdoor units (DX)

  • Quantity take-off

  • ESP & Pump Head Calculations

  • AutoCAD skills

🎯 Final Tip

Your CV is not a catalog — it’s a mirror of your actual skills. Be strategic. Be specific. Be truthful. This way, you’ll impress your interviewer not by showing off, but by showing up with clarity and confidence.
